Located
on the Eastern Shore of Mobile, Bay, Daphne, AL is a growing area
that continues to attract retirees for around the country. AHEPA is
a non profit organization that builds apartments for low income elderly
people and proposed to develop their latest project in Daphne. The
site that the apartments would be built on slopes away from the main
road and down towards a low lying area that was prone to flooding.
Based on the contours of the site, the Owner’s Engineer proposed
the use of a retaining wall that ran along the back and sides of the
development. This allowed the apartments and parking lot to be built
on a flat grade and out of the flood zone.
Synergy
was chosen by Summit to perform the design and construction of the
walls on this project based on Synergy’s past work experience.
Synergy worked to develop a design that would address the challenges
presented on this project. The site was very small, so the wall was
located very close to the building foundations in certain areas and
the main detention pond was located on top of a section of the wall
as well. Synergy’s design expertise allowed for a proper design
to be developed that would address the loading from the building and
the detention pond. Synergy’s crew of experienced personnel
then went to the field and built the walls for Summit. The final layout
of the walls resulted in approximately 6,500 sf of retaining wall
with a maximum height of 16’. The project was successfully completed
in the Winter of 2010.
