A section of SR 30 in Pensacola crossed over Bayou Chico and it
was decided that the old bridge needed to be replaced with a new
bridge that was higher than the existing one. The plans called for
half of SR 30 to remain open while half of the bridge was demolished
and rebuilt. Since the new bridge was higher than the existing one,
the roadway approaches to the bridge would also need to be raised,
which required an MSE temporary wall along the edge of the new roadway
that faced the old roadway. Once half of the roadway and bridge
had been replaced, the traffic would be switched to this side and
the other half of the roadway and bridge would be reconstructed
to the new grades. FDOT uses a lot of MSE temporary walls for applications
like this because it is much cheaper than using other methods such
as temporary sheet piling.
Gulf Atlantic
Constructors (GAC) was selected by Scott Bridge (General Contractor)
to perform the roadwork portion of the project, including the MSE
temporary walls. GAC selected Synergy to provide the design and
construction for the MSE temporary walls on this project based on
their experience with these type of structures and experience working
on DOT projects in the surrounding states. Synergy successfully
provided the design and construction services required for the project
in a professional and timely manner. The final wall drawings called
for about 30,000 sf of MSE temporary wall. The walls were completed
in the Spring of 2009.
