The North Main Street extension ties North Main Street into Highway 90 adjacent to the Jubilee Square Shopping Center. The north end of this extension was in a state of disrepair due to the condition of the roadway side slopes. The side slopes had been progressively failing for several years since their construction in 1995, and by 1999 the failure activity was observed to be threatening the existing curb and roadway pavement. SES entered into a design contract with the Project Engineer to complete a design to repair the roadway side slopes, and later contracted directly with the Owner to construct the approved design.

The work consisted primarily of the design and construction of a reinforced steep slope (0.5H:1V) located at the toe of the existing roadway side slope. The face of the reinforced slope was constructed using geogrids and geotextiles to wrap each lift of fill material. Wire forms were used as a construction expedient to maintain alignment. Additional geogrids were used to provide primary reinforcing for the slope. A slope (3H:1V) was constructed from the top of the reinforced steep slope to the required final grade at the roadway curb. Erosion control matting was used on the upper slope to minimize erosion of the slope face until vegetation had been established.

This project was partially funded for the City by the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service. Nearly 600 feet of slope repair was successfully constructed during a one-month period in early 1999.
