The development of a large tract of land in Daphne, Alabama required significant site improvement to provide primary access to the development. The key components of the site improvements included construction of two modular block retaining walls and installation of several storm water management structures. These components were required to provide the proposed entrance drive to the development crossing a large ravine.
SES was retained directly
by the Owner to design and construct the proposed retaining walls and to install
the storm water management structure which were designed by the Owner’s
consultant. Site clearing and the installation of other utilities were also
included as part of the work performed by SES. The retaining walls were each
approximately 225 feet in length and had a combined face area of 4,600 square
feet. The walls were constructed using the mechanically stabilized earth approach,
with concrete modular blocks used as facing elements and geogrids used to
form the reinforced soil prism. Internal and external retaining wall analyses,
as well as global slope stability analyses, were performed to design the geogrid
elements. The storm water management structures that were installed by SES
and its subcontractors included 64 linear feet of 84-inch diameter concrete
pipe and an energy dissipating headwall. SES began construction of the work
on the project in May of 2000 and completed the work in July of the same year.
