The University of South
Alabama(USA) has long been known for its medical program. The USA
Mitchell Cancer Research Institute was constructed to provide a
facility designed to treat cancer patients with the latest technology
available. It also has the equipment required for researchers searching
for the latest treatments and cures for various forms of cancer.
The layout of the facility was such that 4 retaining walls were
required. These walls needed to be unique, so a 3-piece system was
chosen by the Owner. The main drive and parking area was originally
designed using an asphalt surface. The Owner decided that a paver
surface would be better suited for the site and was required as
part of the project. The intent was to make the facility as aesthetically
pleasing as possible for the patients and staff.
Gulf Equipment Corp.
was awarded the site package for this project. They chose Synergy
as their design/build contractor for the retaining walls on the
site. Synergy designed and installed over 6,000 sf of the Anchor
Highland Stone blocks (3-piece system) on 4 walls at this facility.
During construction of the walls, the Owner advised that pavers
would be required on a portion of the project. Synergy was hired
by Gulf Equipment to provide and install the pavers required. Over
30,000 sf of pavers were installed. The walls and pavers required
on this project were successfully completed in Feb. 2009.
