The landfill was
expanded to accommodate additional volume of waste material. In order
to maximize capacity, perimeter berms were constructed with a 2.5H:1V
outside slope and a 1H:1V inside slope. The site configuration was
such that the berms were constructed on top of several existing soft
clay deposits that varied in both thickness and strength. The soft
soils consisted of silty clay and sandy silt layers interbedded with
the various clay layers. A geogrid reinforced berm was designed and
constructed which provided both internal and external long-term stability
for the structure. The project was completed and placed in service
in September 1993.
