Wastewater from
the paper mill’s process system was being stored and treated in
an on-site impoundment that was nearing capacity. The earthen dikes,
which had been constructed over soft soils, needed to be raised to both
increase capacity and provide protection from flooding of nearby rivers
and streams. Due to property constraints, a portion of the project required
constructing the dike raise on the inboard side. Geogrids were used
to provide slope stability for the areas where inboard construction
was necessary. The project was completed in May 1994 and was placed
in service.
