The construction
of a 2,100-foot levee to a height of forty feet above a slurried fly
ash deposit was accomplished through the use of geogrid reinforcing
and wick drains. A full-scale test section was first constructed to
verify the design assumptions. The instrumentation on the test section
included settlement plates, piezometers, slope inclinometers and strain
gauges attached to the reinforcing geogrids. Following the successful
completion of the test section, the balance of the levee was constructed
utilizing the same design. This project was completed in 1990 and
received the Honors Award from the American Consulting Engineers Council
in their 1991 Engineering Excellence Competition.
