After years of political debate, the City of Pensacola finally decided to develop a stadium, amphitheater, and commercial development complex near downtown Pensacola at a site that was next to the water. The site presented design challenges related to difficult design requirements for water control. The front part of the site had 2 large retention ponds separated by a box culvert. There was a need for retaining walls along both sides of the box culvert. There was an additional wall along an access ramp beside the stadium. The wall geometries and design requirements presented unique challenges that would require Synergy’s experienced engineers to handle.
After the project was approved, the design team worked quickly to put together the plans for the project. Early in the design phase, Synergy was brought in to help with the work related to the walls. One of the challenging design requirements was to devise a way to build the walls around the pond and make them impermeable up to the high water elevation of the ponds. Synergy developed a detailed process whereby a mortarless block wall system with geogrid reinforcing could meet this requirement without the use of a liner system behind the wall. Additionally, Synergy was able to design a wire wall system facing the bay that had stone at the face for erosion protection and was less expensive than a concrete block wall. The final design required approximately 6,000 sf of retaining wall to be built with a maximum height of 19’. The project was successfully completed in early 2012.
