The development of geosynthetic reinforcement in the early 80’s led to the advent of reinforced soil structures. This new technology gave the designer unlimited options in solving grade separation challenges at any site. With most of the “flat” sites being developed already, Owner’s and Engineers are faced with project sites that are more challenging to develop. The ability to design a geogrid reinforced slope at a 50 or 60 degree angle or a to design segmental block/wire form retaining wall to heights in excess of 50’ can help make a site “useable”. These types of structures have been used for decades as a means to improve the economics of site development.
